Bio

Pocket Panda is a Seattle-based “Indie-Dance-Folk” band that started out as a young bear cub trying to perpetuate a nearly extinct population deep in the mountains of China. They incorporate diverse musical elements including both electric and acoustic instrumentation, and contrasting feelings, such as sentimentality juxtaposed with reflections on modern day challenges. A large variety of influences appear more or less directly in their music, including: Elliot Smith, Fleet Foxes, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Iron and Wine, and Sufjan Stevens, as well as subtler influences like Claude Debussy and Charles Mingus. Eric Herbig, a singer-songwriter who grew up around Chicago, originally formed the band. Eric started playing piano at the age of 6, when his mother instilled both a fondness for music as well as a hatred for ‘click-y,’ dirty, old, wind-up cooking timers. He later switched to guitar in response to an infatuation with both Kurt Cobain and the grunge music scene. David Cho, originally from Seoul, South Korea, received a degree in violin from Five Towns College in New York where he studied jazz and classical violin. With his technically-savvy style, he creates emotive and intriguing melodies, all while taking care to blend in with the rest of the band. Jordan Cunningham plays mandolin and guitar, and studied audio engineering at Sonoma State. He works at Empty Sea Studios in Seattle, and contributed much of the engineering for the last (and upcoming) Pocket Panda recordings. Mike Waller has over 20 years of experience playing classical music, received a degree in music from Western Washington, and is often termed a “keyboard playa.” Bassist, Chris Allen, supplies the low warm tones (sometimes incorporating synth bass), and always with thoughtfulness and a strong sense of drive and groove. The band’s drummer, Jamian Briar, is self-taught and originally from Los Angeles. His many years playing marching drums and hand percussion have served to develop an articulate and nuanced style with varied dynamics and rhythmic complexity that adapts to the natural flow of the music. Finally, there are also a few band cats that don’t actually play any music (meow), however their contributions towards overall band sanity cannot be overstated.

With that we say…
Thank you, kind reader, for reading!
